In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 main tactics employed. You want to be able to switch tactics quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate procedure at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is then in serious dire straits taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effectual backgame: after all, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
