In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 chief techniques used. You want to be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious dire straits due to the fact that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It needs to be played when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effectual backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, considering that you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this situation!
