In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 main strategies used. You want to be agile enough to switch techniques quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opponent is shifting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it’s more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
