In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 fundamental techniques employed. You must be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to lock in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there’s no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opponent gives you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
