In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 main plans used. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your competitor rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious difficulty due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchor spots are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, because you do not have other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this situation!
