Backgammon – Three General Schemes

In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief plans used. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time trouble because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as this strategy greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are near your opponent’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other additional checkers to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
