In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 main game plans employed. You must be agile enough to switch strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opponent is now in big-time difficulty taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better places for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have any other additional pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this case!
